Dec 31, 2020. #14. If it won't start in this weather due to the glow plugs all being dud then you're really not going to make a difference with a hair dryer or sticking burning rags in there. It sounds like there is an underlying issue besides the plugs. It's cold sure, but nothing like proper cold.

My dad has a mid 60's Ford tractor with the small diesel, it also has no glow plugs. You just keep cranking till it builds up enough heat to start, or give it a shot of ether. the lamp test is only to show the plugs are not burnt out.i doubt if the average owner has the means to test for resistance .dierect injection engines when in good condition will start in cold conditions without the need for glow plugs.anyway after 90000 miles having any doubt about their condition i would treat the engine with a full new set.
