Drivers Sebastien Bourdais, Joey Hand, and Dirk Muller won their class at Le Mans with this Ford GT in 2016 -- fifty years after Ford Motor Company's first victory in the French endurance race. The GT's carbon-fiber body, direct fuel injection V-6 engine, and flying buttress features were all state-of-the-art, but the car's look recalled the original GT40 of the 1960s.

It was a long time in the making, but finally an American car won the race. To be more specific, a 1966 Ford GT40 Mark II won the race. In fact, the GT40 made up the top three finishers.
Chassis P/1016 is believed to be the only GT40 Mk II that ever raced with the unusual PowerShift automatic transaxle. For the 1966 Le Mans race on June 18th and 19th, GT40 P/1016 received final preparations on the day before the race, including the addition of matte Day-Glo pink highlights on the nose and flanks of its Kandy Gold bodywork.
